Debt Handling How To

The first step in dealing with your debt is getting a handle on the situation and getting an accurate picture of how much you owe and to whom. It also means that you need to figure out what your total payments will be each month and what the interest rates are.

Don’t fall into the trap most people with large amounts of debt are in; avoiding facing the reality of their financial troubles. You must gain an accurate understanding of where you stand currently and create a plan for getting debt free again.

Once you understand who you owe, how much you owe and what the interest costs will be you can develop a budget around those figures. Your budget should allot the largest amounts that you can comfortably afford to pay your debts. You can pay off the smallest bills first (snowball method) and then pay off the next bill. Rinse and repeat.

Conversely you can pay off the largest bills first, saving a ton on interest. You may not be able to live as comfortably in the here and now but the savings in most cases are substantial.

Once you understand your situation and have made a budget it’s time to stop borrowing and start sticking to the budget. Until you have paid your debts down to a reasonable level you should not open any new lines of credit or utilize any existing ones. If you are a credit card junkie then you should wait until you have paid your full balances before charging any new purchases. 5% may be a reasonable level for others that posses a bit more self control when it comes to impulse purchasing. 20% should be your maximum and only if you have an extremely strong self control mechanism and don’t mind a bit of a squeeze.

Face reality. Make a commitment to understanding your problem and working steadily towards fixing it.
